Is this a secret

I'm not sure if I should tell the world.

I just came back from BudaLounge and they let me taste their new crab cake menu item.

Be careful Indy, this thing is good!

Mango, Cilantro, Onion, etc.... well worth it!

I can't wait til I can order it!

More Outdoor Dining Please!

Thanks to Feed Me/Drink Me, I've learned about a situation that Martha Hoover is experiencing.

As you remember from a previous blog post, she it attempting to expand her amazing breakfast franchise to Pizza.

I, personally, live pretty close to this proposed restaurant and I'd like to see more outdoor dining.

I'll be writing to the city.

YOU SHOULD TOO.

Scott Wise - Restaurateur of the Year

It is no surprise to see that Scott Wise, owner of Scotty's Brewhouse, has won this year's Indiana Restaurant Association's Restaurateur of the year award!

Scott is known for his hands on approach for superior service. He is approachable, open, honest, and always striving for perfection. His restaurants have a great sports bar ambiance and the food is better than most places around. The ribs and the wings are my favorite items, but his menu is large enough that I'm sure you'll find some favorites!

Scott has also embraced technology. His Facebook account and Twitter accounts are always very active. He participated in Blog Indiana this year, and has hosted Tweetups and other Indianapolis events. His downtown restaurant even had a Tastecasting.

He is truly a business leader. In the midst of a deep recession he successfully opened his 5th location adding life...and outdoor seats to much needed block of Indianapolis. It is also not uncommon to see other restaurateurs asking for his advice on Twitter and Scott is quick to comment on blogs that shed light into his business.

So, Congratulations Scott! Keep making Indianapolis a better place to eat and have fun!

Technology and Restaurants

Sunday night I received an SMS message(aka Text Message) from Twitter. It was a tweet from one of the accounts that I follow to my phone. The message was from @BUDALounge, the Twitter alias for the amazing sushi lounge on Mass Ave.

The message read:

We obviously dropped everything and headed down there! Yes, their sushi rolls are that good, very untraditional.

The next day I received another SMS message from @Zingrestaurant, the relatively new, small-plate restaurant in a triangular building on Indiana Avenue. This time informing me of another delicious sounding deal:

I happened to be out of town and couldn't make it, but I did forward it along to some friends who told me that the Brats were wonderful!

Well yesterday I received yet another Text message that had me salivating enough to change my plans. This time it was from the Facebook account of Chef JJ's Backyard in Broad Ripple. Chef JJ's Backyard is an experience dining establishment that just recently opened along the white river in Broad Ripple. Participants learn how to grill different specialties. (I've signed up for Hell Night)

We had an amazing time! We enjoyed the FREE grilled specialties and the delicious beer from Indianapolis' newest brewery, SunKing Brewing. Their story and their beer is worth giving some attention.

Text messaging seems to be changing the way that restaurants market to their customers. In addtion to these offers I've mentioned, I've also received offers from Scotty's Brewhouse and Yats, to name a few... (And don't forget the $25 gift certificate from The Hungry Brick)

On a recently trip to Boston, many of their bars were linked to a innovative system called BarCast. This was a SMS message service where patrons could actually communicate with other patrons at any of the bars in the system. This created quite a bit of entertainment and we stayed longer than we probably would have otherwise. It also helped make our decision about which bar to head off to next.

A friend of mine has recently started working on a restaurant text messaging service, textaurant, that will even further establish a connection between patron and restaurant. His concept would be an SMS delivery service that would change the way you wait for a table. It also promises to help improve customer service.

In reading "What Would Google Do?" by Jeff Jarvis, he lays out an example of the restaurant of the future. He talks about an interactive menu, highlighting how often an entree has been ordered, or a wiki where patrons can adjust menu recipes. He writes about how a restaurant will eventually become a platform to bring the diner an even more customized experience.

The future definitely looks yummy!

What other cool or innovative ways are restaurants marketing to you? What are your thoughts about how technology is changing your dining experience?

Just a quick Naisa Shout - out

I just wanted to publically thank Christina(and staff) at Naisa Cafe in Fountain Square.

We just came back from a delicious dinner, with plenty of left overs!

8 of us went.
We each ordered an entrée.
We shared, Family Style dining!
There was not one item I did not like.
That's the way to do Naisa!

Of course, my favorite, the Basil Curry Fried rice that I blogged about a little while ago, is still my favorite. But now I've expanded some of the must haves! The Bulgogi and the Black Pepper Beef really stood out! I also loved the Pork with Coconut & Curry sauce. The only item that didn't seem to stand out was the Kong Pao Shrimp.

All in all, I just love this place and wish they delivered to Broad Ripple.

If you go, tell Christina that Phil sent ya!

A Touch of Grass - A Nice Broad Ripple experience

This weekend I had a friend in town from Chicago.

While we ended up visiting a variety of Festivals and a Neighborhood yard sale, one of the more entertaining things we did was to visit the Wellington Pub in Broad Ripple.

The Wellington is a part of the Corner Wine Bar, which itself is a fine place to grab a meal. However, on Friday and Saturday nights around 9pm, the wine cellar is transformed to an intimate setting of Banjos, guitars, humor, and fun!

This is one of my favorite things to do in Indianapolis and my out of state guests, always enjoy their time. The music is fun and the band does a great job of incorporating the audience. Whether it is asking for suggestions or making someone pass along their "Yellow Band Can" you are sure to have a smile on your face by the time you leave.

This place often seems like a lesser known secret....and often like a secret known by too many. It is sometimes difficult to get a table, so be sure to get there early.

Food and Drinks are served, so if you time it right, you could have dinner followed by the entertainment.

Enjoy!

All you can EAT Extravaganza - Indianapolis: Buffets and other bottomless fare.

I mentioned in a previous post that Indy lack Delivery, Buffets on the other hand are EVERYWHERE. It really seems like there are a lot of places where you can PIG out.

I haven't tried all of them, but I do admit that I visit some more than I should.

Now, I'm not talking about all of the Chinese Food buffets in the city, although my favorite is probably Happy Garden. I'm also not talking about the KFC buffet, like the one near Columbus, IN. Instead I am going to focus on the places that are a bit more unique.

Call first to make sure they still have the all you can eat option! Feel free to bookmark this entry, I'll try to update it as I learn more. Also, I've chosen to link most of the restaurants to local blogs in which they are not necessarily discussing the buffet.

  • Barcelona - They do a Tapas Lunch buffet during the week and a Sangria buffet on Sundays. Nope, this doesn't mean all the Sangria you can drink, but we wish it did!
  • Indian Garden - Next to Barcelona, it is probably one of the best Indian buffets in the city.
  • Vito's on Penn - Can you say, Italian Lunch Buffet? How one goes back to work after this one, I'm not sure.
  • Mississippi Belle - Delicious Soul food....with lots of soul. I like the Fried Chicken the best, but their Ribs are also worth trying.
  • Hollyhock Hill - All you can eat comfort food. This College Street establishment is known as a place to celebrate family style!
  • Euphoria - This fine dining restaurant often offers an all you can eat raw bar on Tuesday nights. All while enjoying one of the best views of the city.
  • Da Blue Lagoon - All you can eat Caribbean food....yep, feel like you're vacationing in Jamaica!
  • Edward's Drive-IN - All you can eat Fried food. Chicken, fish, macaroni and cheese....Enjoy!
  • Thai Taste - The 1st Thursday of any month, this Thai restaurant puts on an amazing vegetarian spread.
  • Scotty's Brewhouse - Arguably the best wings in the city. Every Monday you can sample all of the sauces as you eat as many wings as they can prepare.

Other honorable mentions: Mark Pi (Sundays), The Journey on 96th(Sushi/Chinese), and Red Robin's all you can eat fries.

Tuesday, September 8th, the Live Market at Indiana Live Casino becomes a buffet, I'm sure that will get some more people to visit this latest Indiana attraction.

You also have to love all of the Amish Hearth Dinners you get in some of the state's Amish communities as well as some of the all you can eat fish frys at some of the fire stations.

VOID: So this section won't really be a missed opportunity, as I try to do in this blog, but rather a few places that I'd love to see a buffet. Not necessarily to eat as much as I can eat, but rather to sample more of their menu items. I would love to see an all you can eat mussel meal at Brugge in Broad Ripple. I tend to stick to my favorites, but an all you can eat option, could broaden my horizons. This is also true for Bazbeaux's Pizza. The Colossus is my favorite, but who knows....maybe one of the others should be. It would also nice to see all you can eat options at Yats, Naked Tchopstixs, or even Great Garden.

What are your favorite places to gorge yourself in Indianapolis? Where do you wish we had a buffet?
